Ashley Judd May Make Bid for Kentucky Senate Seat

Ashley Judd, whose family has been in Eastern Kentucky for eight generations, is reportedly exploring a bid for the seat currently held by Republican Mitch McConnell. She certainly can't expect kid gloves from McConnell, whose campaign manager promised "to tear apart any Democrat who joins the fray"

“It’s going to sting,” Jesse Benton, McConnell’s campaign manager, warned to any candidates considering a run. “We’re going to make sure that you don’t come out with your nose clean. We’re going to drive your negatives up and very aggressively and publicly litigate your record before the citizens of Kentucky.”

Even more interesting is Politico's "roundtable" that discusses whether Judd has a good chance against McConnell featuring the opinions of several women pundits. One pointedly notes that while her "domestic politics couldn't be farther from Judd['s, her] candidacy will test the boundaries of celebrity. Republicans would be wise to not assume she appeals only to liberals. In the 21st century, women's issues aren't the same as they were decades ago." This would be an interesting match-up to compare with the 2008 elections to see if the coverage and treatment of women candidates has evolved meaningfully.
