Public figures really need to get their social media usage in check.

Tricia Macke, FOX News Affiliate Anchor calls
Rachel Maddow an 'angry young man'. |
I was horrified to come across this
article from
The Advocate revealing that Tricia Macke, an anchor for a Fox News affiliate station referred to Rachel Maddow as an 'angry young man' on her Facebook page earlier this month. When asked to apologize by some of her followers, she passively dismissed the comment and said, "I am sorry. I should have said 'antagonistic.'"
However, this
article from
Your Tango argues that comments like these have drastic consequences on LGBT youth that are struggling to come to terms with their sexuality. She argues that public figures who make statements like this one reinforce the notion that being gay is wrong, and are therefore justifying bullying against LGBT youth.

Rachel Maddow |
Furthermore, I think this directly relates back to our discussions in class over the feminine/competence double-bind that plagues powerful women in the workplace. Rachel Maddow is an extremely educated and competent journalist who has worked hard for her accomplishments and to overcome adversity because of her sexuality. However, comments like these (especially comments by a fellow woman) belittle these accomplishments and attack Maddow's lack of femininity.
What do you think of Macke's comments? Do you think she should formally apologize?
