As I was reading Huffington Post Women Voices, I was in disbelief when I came across this article. It describes a Barbie made in the mid-1960s called "Slumber Party Barbie" that includes a scale permanently set to 110 pounds and a diet book called "How to Lose Weight." The book only offers one tip--don't eat.
There are so many problems with this situation. First of all, this is a product for CHILDREN. When it's a proven fact that girls develop ideas about body image from a young age, this kind of message can be extremely detrimental. Girls are already overwhelmed with images of skinny women in movies and on TV, they don't need it from their toys as well. Second of all, who takes a scale and a diet book to a sleepover anyways?? That's just ridiculous.
Next time Barbie, just bring a sleeping bag.
